Reflection in the Chomsky Hierarchy

چکیده
The class of regular languages can be generated from the regular expressions. These regular expressions, however, do not themselves form a regular language, as can be seen using the pumping lemma. On the other hand, the class of enumerable languages can be enumerated by a universal language that is one of its elements. We say that the enumerable languages are reflexive. In this paper we investigate what other classes of the Chomsky Hierarchy are reflexive in this sense. To make this precise we require that the decoding function is itself specified by a member of the same class. Could it be that the regular languages are reflexive, by using a different collection of codes? It turns out that this is impossible: the collection of regular languages is not reflexive. Similarly the collections of the context-free, context-sensitive, and computable languages are not reflexive. Therefore the class of enumerable languages is the only reflexive one in the Chomsky Hierarchy. In honor of Roel de Vrijer on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday

Type 1 Agn Unification
The model I recently proposed for the structure of quasars offers to unify the many aspects of Type 1 AGN: emission lines, absorption lines and reflection features. This makes the model heavily overcon-strained by observation and readily tested. Here I first outline the model, and then concentrate on how the model answers objections raised since publication-with many of the tests being reported...
متن کاملDoes Formal Complexity Reflect Cognitive Complexity? Investigating Aspects of the Chomsky Hierarchy in an Artificial Language Learning Study
This study investigated whether formal complexity, as described by the Chomsky Hierarchy, corresponds to cognitive complexity during language learning. According to the Chomsky Hierarchy, nested dependencies (context-free) are less complex than cross-serial dependencies (mildly context-sensitive). In two artificial grammar learning (AGL) experiments participants were presented with a language c...
متن کاملSome Theoretical and Practical Results in Context-Sensitive and Adaptive Parsing
We introduce a fifth language accepting machine called the PDA-T, demonstrate some of its interesting formal properties, and show its role in the §-Calculus. Based upon this new machine and the §-Calculus’ other properties, we demonstrate the §-Calculus’ formal Turing Power, and then propose a formal language classification (the §-Hierarchy), derived largely from the Chomsky Hierarchy, but with...
متن کاملFormal language theory: refining the Chomsky hierarchy.
The first part of this article gives a brief overview of the four levels of the Chomsky hierarchy, with a special emphasis on context-free and regular languages. It then recapitulates the arguments why neither regular nor context-free grammar is sufficiently expressive to capture all phenomena in the natural language syntax. In the second part, two refinements of the Chomsky hierarchy are revie...
متن کاملTopological Complexity of Context-Free ω-Languages: A Survey
We survey recent results on the topological complexity of context-free ω-languages which form the second level of the Chomsky hierarchy of languages of infinite words. In particular, we consider the Borel hierarchy and the Wadge hierarchy of non-deterministic or deterministic context-free ω-languages. We study also decision problems, the links with the notions of ambiguity and of degrees of amb...
